Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository

Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository | Big Data + Libraries | Scoop.it
Learning analytics cannot yet be considered a mature field in UK higher education. However, the use of data about learners and their learning to address areas such as attrition and curriculum enhancement is increasingly being investigated through projects at an institutional level. A recent survey by the UK Heads of eLearning Forum (HeLF), which elicited responses from 53 institutions, suggested that there had been rapid change in the adoption of learning analytics over the past two years. Those institution s “working towards implementation” had nearly doubled from 34% to 66%. Meanwhile, the proportion of respondents’ universities not implementing learning analytics at all had decreased from 47% to 13% (Newland & Trueman, 2017).

Visiting libraries is the most popular activity in the UK (spread these resources far and wide!)

Visiting libraries is the most popular activity in the UK (spread these resources far and wide!) | Big Data + Libraries | Scoop.it

I'm always struck by just how many people use libraries in the UK. It's a
mind-bogglingly huge amount.

When we hear about the figures they're always couched in terms of
reductions - CIPFA tells us about the continuing decline, noting that UK
visits to public libraries in 2013-14 fell to 282 million, from 288 million
the previous year. I'm not surprised it fell - we lost 49 branches and
1,000 full-time-equivalent staff in the same period.

But why do we never take the figures in isolation? 282 million visits!
That's MASSIVE. And then I started wondering how that compared with other
things we visit in the UK. I came up with a list of as many as I could
think of, and guess what? We visit libraries more than we visit ANYTHING
else. In fact, we visit libraries twice as often as we visit football
matches, theatres, A&E and the Church combined.

I mean come on!Tweet

When the Data hits the Fan!: UK Government promotes Open Data - a public good but where is the money? | Big Data + Libraries | Scoop.it

A debate was held at The Royal Society on 10th July, 2013 titled Maximising the use of public data – should research and publicly acquired data be made more accessible? At this debate David Willetts MP and Minister of State for Universities and Science gave his strong support for Open Data and stated that "the public have a right to access publicly funded research".

This blog post gives details of the debate with links to the resources available from the organisers The Foundation for Science and Technology. It also asks the question: is this an unfunded mandate?

Work on a transparent ethical policy at The Open University highlighted concerns about technology and privacy

UK universities are monitoring students’ information to help them to improve their academic performance but are giving insufficient thought to the effectiveness of the technology they use and the rights of those they track.

This is according to Sharon Slade, senior lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Management and Law at The Open University, which is believed to have become the first institution in the UK to produce a publicly available written policy on the ethical use of student data for learning analytics – the practice of collecting and analysing student data with the intention of optimising their educational experience.

Alex Enkerli's curator insight, November 7, 2014 10:27 AM

Learning Analytics could represent a big issue in the near future. Nothing new, in some ways, but an increase in relevance.
