It is imperative to write a thank you note after an interview. For instance, when I applied at the Hyatt, after the interview, a week after I sent a thank you note which let the office and the person hiring know my interest for the job and the company as well as a humble thank you for their time.

Definitely in agreement about this, but would add that the resume should tell your story in a way that will illustrate how your skills fit the needs of the company and the job to which you are applying. I definitely like this approach, though!

185 Verbs That Will Make Your #Resume Powerful! | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
No matter what duty or accomplishment you’re trying to show off, we’ve got just the verb for you.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Using the right verbs can make the difference between being in the okay pile and the call back first stack!

To me verbs tell the untold story.  If I am looking for a strong leader and the verbs used are all about what you accomplished as an individual contributor...you probably won't be in the must see first pile.

Don't look at your resume like writing a boring essay -- think of it as a brochure and you are selling YOU.  It is imporant that your brand comes through loud and clear, and the use of powerful verbs is an important ingreidient to a successful resume.

Hope you enjoy the verbs.  Until next time...PS - Live on Purpose!

Polish up your #Resume in less than 15 minutes

Polish up your #Resume in less than 15 minutes | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

Two quick ways to amplify your resume, and to improve your chances of your resume being seen by a human is:

1.  Include the job title of the position you are applying for in your resume.  If at all possible that means that the target position you are applying for should be strategically placed in your resume.  You can accommodate as part of your summary position statement at the top of your resume or place as part of the job experience.

Hint:  I am not suggesting that you include an objective at the top of your resume or to include a title of a position that you do not have any experience with.  I assume if you are applying for the position, that you would have experience with the job responsibilities:)

2.  Don't just tell me what you did, show me the results!

Action verbs, measures, and numbers are important…so make sure that your resume doesn’t just state what you did – share the results you achieved while in the role!

If you have ever been looking for a job I’m sure asked yourself:  “What can I do to make my resume stand out and get an employer to seriously consider me for a job”?   If you Googled the term “resume”, you know that there’s a dizzying array of information and [...]
Trish Sadar's insight:

Great tips in this article!

I particularly agree with the fact that one size does not fit all.  Each person has a unique personality, set of skills, competencies, strengths, and experience.

Not to mention that each resume should be repackaged to fit the position and the company to highlight the unique skills, experience, competencies and strengths the position and company seek.

Think of your resume like it is a brochure and you are selling what you can do for the company in the brochure.  The goal of your resume is to differentiate you from the hundreds/thousands of competing resumes to land you an interview.

So after you read the article, take another look at your resume and start repackaging!

Trish Sadar's insight:

Instead of an objective statement I always suggest a strong summary that is targeted to the job/industry you are seeking.  Also, adding strengths and accomplishments will help inject your peronality into the resume.

I could not agree more with the article regarding metrics.  When I scan resumes, I am more interested in what you accomplished while you were in the job, instead of what you were responsible for.  So show those numbers, metrics, and Key performance indicators.

Is it bragging when it is the truth - #Resume

Is it bragging when it is the truth - #Resume | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

When it comes to your resume is it bragging when you are telling the truth?   So many of my highly talented friends have such high accomplishments, and are so humble.  I find that to be such a wonderful attribute.

When it comes to their resumes however, it is like pulling teeth to get them to document their relevant accomplishments.  They feel like they are bragging, and the resume does not reflect who they are.

First of all the days have long passed when a resume what simply a one page document that outlined what positions you held.

A successful resume should be approached like designing a brochure, and the product you are selling is you.  The difference is that a brochure may focus on subjective benefits where your resume needs to talk numbers.

It is not bragging when you state that through your leadership....Your division exceeded revenue goals by ___%, or increased customer loyalty by ____, etc.

So please don't think of it as bragging, just tell me the facts:)

Hope this helps:)  Until next time....PS - Live on Purpose!

See your #Resume like part of your wardrobe.

See your #Resume like part of your wardrobe. | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

There was a time not so long ago when things were simpler, before the internet, iPads or smart phones were around.  Back then a resume was just that …a resume. The task of putting together a resume was not a headache.

The goal was simple:  to document job history in a simple to read one page format.

So what has changed in 20 years?  Just about everything!

The good news...it doesn't have to be so confusing or difficult.  Just  look at your resume like part of your wardrobe.   You have different resumes for different purposes, just as you have different clothes for different occasions.

If you think of your resume like part of your wardrobe, it will help you to understand that there is a place and time for every outfit in your closet.  In your wardrobe you proabably have bathing suits, shorts, jeans, and suits.  For every important ocassion you may spend time to carefully select the perfect outfit that is the right fit for the event.

It is the same way with resumes.  You need to repackage your knowledge, skills, experience, strengths, and accomplishments in a way that make it easy for the hiring manager to determine that your resume (like an outfit) is a right fit for the position and the company.  You can do that by making sure that you dress up your resume with the knowledge, skills, experience, strengths, and accomplishments that the company is looking for.

I hope this helps a bit.  Until next time!

So you love knitting, cooking, playing with your nieces and nephews, and traveling. Terrific! It's great that you've found something you're passionate about.
Trish Sadar's insight:

It may sound funny; however, if you are smart or lucky enough to get your resume seen by a human being....it could be that a hobby such as marathon running could be the last straw that lands you the interview.

When we look at countless resumes they all seem to start looking the same.  Injecting personality into your resume that is relevant to the position and gives us a sense of who is you can work.

Again, you don't want to drown the most important information on your resume with details that aren't important; however, adding a line about your hobbies as long as they are professional and "G" rated could certainly make your resume memorable.

How To Show You Get The Company Culture In Your Cover Letter

How To Show You Get The Company Culture In Your Cover Letter | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
When it comes to cover letters, hiring mangers want to know: What can you do for us, and how will you fit in? Here's how to answer the (tough) second part.
Trish Sadar's insight:

The bad news is that there is a chance that you will put much effort into customizing a cover letter, and it will never be read....

My response:  "So, take the time to personalize the cover letter any way...... including the company's culture."

While having a personalized cover letter or resume won't guarantee that you land the interview, what it will do is increase the likelihood of your resume being seen by a human.

If you are lucky enough that your resume lands in a recruiter's hands -- then a personalized and targeted resume and cover letter will improve the odds of landing the interview in the first round.

Remember the goal is not to simply do what everyone else does -- you have to do that extra to make a great impression.  Once you get the interview, then you can sell yourself in person!
