Employers Use Your Resume And LinkedIn Profile Differently

Employers Use Your Resume And LinkedIn Profile Differently | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Many job seekers make the mistake of assuming that their resume and LinkedIn profile are the same thing. … they’re not.
Trish Sadar's insight:

It is true that recruiters and employers use resumes and Linkedin differently.

If a resume is filtered through an online application system, and is seen as a viable candidate.  Often the recruiter or employer calls the candidate to see if the person is still looking for the job and to determine their salary needs.  The next step often is to set up a screening interview.

Before I would send the candidate to meet with the hiring manager, often I would review the Linkedin and Facebook pages to get a sense for the person's professionalism.

The resume shows your experience, and the Linkedin profile and facebook shows your personality.  What are your thoughts?

Trish Sadar's insight:

Are you keeping up with the resume trends for 2013?  Even though most employers still require the standard resume, it doesn't mean that you can't get yours in shape by making your resume more interactive.

1.  Have you added the employer's website's urls

2. Incorporated links to multimedia samples of your work (if you have) QR code?

3. Added in your resume the url to your own personal website

4. Added your blog (if you have one)

5. Even adding links to videos of professors or employers who are recommending you

6.  You can even add a link to the location of your video responses to common interview questions (Interview Master...http://www.interviewmaster.in/faq.html )

6 Tips For Avoiding The Resume Black Hole - Forbes

6 Tips For Avoiding The Resume Black Hole - Forbes | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Hiring managers receive heaps of resumes for any given job opening, so they often miss, skip or toss a lot of them. Luckily, there are things you can do to help ensure your resume is seen. Here are 6 tips.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Excellent tips in this article from Forbes.

Yes...research the hiring process, and do follow up after you have submitted your resume.  Many times when a candidate finds out the name of the recruitment manager/or the hiring manager.  They often also send their resume via snail mail to those individuals letting them know that they applied for the position.

I can't tell you how many times a manager has called HR and said, I received this resume who applied online, and I would like to meet this person.  It doesn't work all of the time, and you will not usually stand a chance if you haven't followed the submission process.

Yes, your resume must answer the question to the recruiter.....can this person do the job?  Are they qualified and a right fit for the company?

Also....remember.....your #1 job of your resume is to land you the interview!  That means your resume needs to be targeted to the job/industry and set you apart from all of the hundreds and possibly thousands of resumes.

Your resume must sell yourself when you are not there to do it yourself.  Does your resume do that for you?

On other times, we need to trim down certain specifics that may not be relevant or significant for the position you are applying for.

Excellent article!

Think of our waiter John as if he were an applicant submitting a resume and cover letter:

  • He researched his target audience (noting our wine choices)
  • Name detailed some of what he had to offer (and made us feel good about our choices so far)
  • Even better – he took the time to describe how his suggestions fit well with our displayed preferences

In short, he guided his audience… showing us how what he was offering matched what we may want, and why – and showed a clear expertise and value proposition in the process.
