Noch nie wollten so viele Luxemburgisch lernen wie zurzeit. Während Französisch nach wie vor die beliebteste Sprache am Institut National des Langues (INL) ist, erlebt Luxemburgisch einen Boom. Die Zahl der Anmeldungen für die entsprechenden Kurse ist in zwei Jahren von 3814 auf 5291 gestiegen.

Gleiches gilt für den Bereich der Erwachsenenbildung, wo die Gesamtzahl der Schüler in den letzten beiden Schuljahren um fast 1500 zugenommen hat (7669 in 2016/2017 und 9174 in 2018/2019).

Das Gesetz zur Anerkennung der deutschen Gebärdensprache wurde am Dienstag von den Abgeordneten in der Chamber einstimmig verabschiedet. Dadurch wird die Gebärdensprache offiziell in Luxemburg anerkannt. So haben Gehörlose und Schwerhörige künftig das Recht, einen Dolmetscher bei Verwaltungsgängen und offiziellen Terminen um Hilfe zu bitten. Die Kosten dafür werden übernommen.

Darüber hinaus kann die Familie einer hörgeschädigten Person 100 Stunden kostenlosen Unterricht nehmen, um Gebärdensprache zu lernen. Das künftig Zentrum für Sprachentwicklung wird diese Kurse organisieren.

The Lux Lingo podcast has been launched: it was developed by Ara City Radio presenter/producer Sam Steen and Luxembourgish language teacher Tania Hoffmann to help listeners learn the key words and phrases that they will need to get by in Luxembourg.

The podcast is not a replacement for language classes but is something of an Audio Phrasebook. Each episode will cover certain topics and scenarios such as introducing themselves or asking for directions and listeners will learn the vocabulary and sentences they will need to use as well as those they might hear in response.

The great thing about the podcast is that listeners can learn on the go and at their convenience. If they want to go over certain points of the episode again and again they can do that or if they want a quick reminder of the phrases just before they use them they can do that too.

Additional Luxembourgish language teachers, lessons and nationality language exam sessions will be introduced to cope with the increasing number of people who want to become Luxembourgish nationals.

It was announced last month that the Institut national des langues (INL) – by which language tests are taken – had no exam vacancies until July, with the exception of one session on 6 July, where there are 30 remaining spaces.

Education minister Claude Meisch has now confirmed additional resources will be put in place to meet increasing demand.

"As the number of exam applicants have largely exceeded anticipated numbers, INL has planned to train additional examiners," Meisch said.

"Four extra sessions could be organised after the academic holidays in February, which would allow 512 more applicants to take the exam."

Meisch said that, after the INL moved back to its site on Boulevard de la Foire during the second semester of the 2017-18 academic year, it would be able to hold more regular exam sessions.

At the same time, the number of lessons for the purpose of taking the nationality language test will increase from 38.5 to 54.5 hours per week. 

Extra teaching staff will be added from September 2018.

The Institut National de Langues (INL) will offer courses from a new site in Belval from October.

Luxembourgish, French, German and English classes for adults will be held at the campus in addition to the institute's existing Luxembourg City and Mersch premises.

The campus, located at the Maison du Savoir in Belval, will include 10 classrooms and 14 teachers and will offer 50 language courses per year.

The courses are aimed at adults who wish to improve their oral and written skills in any of the four taught languages.

Le projet de loi sur la langue des signes allemande a été adopté à l'unanimité par les députés ce mardi. Le texte reconnaît officiellement la langue des signes. Ainsi, à l'avenir, les personnes sourdes et malentendantes auront droit de demander l'assistance d'un interprète dans leurs relations avec les administrations de l'État, qui se chargera des frais.

En outre, la famille d'une personne malentendante pourra suivre 100 heures de cours gratuits pour apprendre la langue des signes. C'est le futur Centre pour le développement des compétences langagières qui s'occupera d'organiser ces cours.

Die Luxemburgisch-Kurse des nationalen Sprachen-Instituts (INL) sind überfüllt. Wie Bildungsminister Claude Meisch (DP) am Donnerstag in einer Antwort auf eine parlamentarische Antwort bestätigt, gibt es bis zum 6. Juli dieses Jahres keinen einzigen freien Platz mehr. “Ich muss Angebot und Kurse reorganisieren”, schreibt Meisch an den Abgeordneten Marc Spautz (CSV), der die entsprechende Anfrage gestellt hatte.

Das Phänomen ist neu. Bis zum April 2017 mussten Anwärter maximal einen Monat auf einen Platz in einem Luxemburgisch-Kurs warten. Wegen des neuen Nationalitätengesetzes von Justizminister Félix Braz (déi gréng) sei die Nachfrage allerdings drastisch gestiegen, so dass die Wartezeit mittlerweile bei sechs Monaten liegt. Braz hatte im Gespräch mit dem Tageblatt am Mittwoch erklärt, dass sein Gesetz ein voller Erfolg war. Die Beantragungen der luxemburgischen Nationalität hätten sich verdreifacht, seit der Text im April 2017 in Kraft getreten ist. Bei einer Einbürgerung durch “Naturalisation” müssen Anwärter die Sprachkurse ablegen.

Berlitz Language and Business Training sarl has received authorisation from Luxembourg's Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth that their Luxembourgish language classes will from now on be certified for those applying for Luxembourgish nationality.

The following classes will be certified:

- Luxembourgish Level 1 (A1): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 2 (A2.1): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 3 (A2.2): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 4 (A2.3): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 5 (B1.1): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 6 (B1.2): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 7 (B1.3): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 8 (B2.1): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 9 (B1.2): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

- Luxembourgish Level 10 (C1/2): 30 hours individual / 45 hours group

The authorisation is for a period of 5 years from 17 October 2017.

Up until now, only the Institut National des Langues (INL) has bee certified for Luxembourgish language classes for those applying for Luxembourgish nationality.
