When The Job Interviewer Doesn't Ask The Right Questions
Forbes
Perhaps the reason for not asking the right questions during an interview is that the interviewer is simply not a good interviewer and really doesn't know which questions to ask.

Via Eric Kramer
Trish Sadar's insight:

Very interesting....

If this happens, it could be that the interviewer will base their decisions on a gut feeling.  You can focus on connecting and active listening with the interviewer.

When the interviewer asks, "Do you have any questions?"   You can summarize what you heard from them, demonstrate your interest in the position, and summarize how your skills, experience, and competencies are a perfect fit for the position and company .....then quick ask a question or two.

Trish Sadar's insight:

Nice article.  I always asked these type of questions as behavioral interviews.  What I mean by that is that I asked....What did you do when, etc. or  Describe a time when someone took credit for your work...what did you do?

Candidate's past responses or behaviors surrounding specific themes are good indicators of how someone would handle a situation in the future.

My humble advice:  Have a few learning stories that you can re-position into a few categories.  Think ahead about the situations.  To keep yourself concise in the interview, remember this:  CAR

C - Describe the circumstances briefly

A - Describe the actions you took and who you involved

R - Describe the results that took place

7 Job Interview Questions to Ask an Employer

7 Job Interview Questions to Ask an Employer | Interview Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
7 great job interview questions to ask a potential employer when you are asked if you have any questions.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Before the interview is through the interviewer wants to wrap things up and asks "Do you have any questions"?  This is not the time to say...No, thank you.  It is also not the time to pull out 50 questions.

We need to be sensitive to the amount of time the interviewer has established for the interview.  We don't want to annoy the interview -- we want to stay on their good graces.

Asking a few questions regarding the position is a great suggestion.  This article provides several for you to consider.

Trish Sadar's insight:

Nice article, I especially agree with the statement that recruiters/ or hiring managers are looking for a fit for the team, department, and company.

Once the typical ice-breaker questions, job description questions, and exprience and skill quesitons are asked -- personality and competency based questions may be asked.

Be prepared, review the job posting for required competency questions as well.  Know walking into the interview that you are a right fit for the position and company.

A deadly word to avoid during a screening interview

The word "NO"

Trish Sadar's insight:

If you happen to be lucky enough to be called for an interview from HR, many times this type of interview may be referred to as a screening interview.  During the screening interview questions will be asked about why you want to leave your employer (if you are employed), why you want to work for the company, how much money you are earning, and salary requirementas. Also, questions about gaps of employment will be asked at that time.

Remember the goal of the Pre-Screen interview is for you to get invited back for another interview with the hiring manager.

The purpose of the interview is for HR to determine if you can do the job, meet the qualifictaions, have the experience, demonstrate the required competencies, and have the technical skills and expertise.

So, you may be wondering what is the deadly word that could take me out of the game......well, the word curiously enough is "no."

Okay, I'm not telling you to always say yes or to lie.  What I am encouraging you to do is to be prepared and offer solutions.

One example:

1.  if the interviewer asks you if you have experience with xyz software -- you should do your homework and know that xyz software is similar to the one you are currently using.  You could go onto Lynda.com and educate yourself, and better yet find out how to enroll in a class.

If you are asked the question, instead of saying "No" I don't have experience with that software you could say something like this:

I am familiar with xyz software, it is very similar to the current software that I use which is ____, and I am tentatively enrolled to take the online classes which start ___, and if offered the position I would be able to hit the floor running using the software.

Your job is to show the screener that you are qualified for the position.  You want them to move your resume forward to schedule the next interview.
