Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, September 1, 2014 1:30 AM

If you’re a fan of the Fast and Furious actor, you’re well aware that he has a whopping 83.6 million Facebook fans. If that doesn’t impress you, it should. He has more likes than any other actor on the planet and is very in touch with his fans – something studios would be very interested in using to their advantage to increase a movie’s exposure.

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Evie Nagy:  "In Murder On Snapchat, the message-deleting app, along with other social media, becomes the platform of your worst nightmares."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 12, 2014 5:09 AM

It's normal to be anxious about the digital permanence of your activity on social media, but according to this film, we might have a lot more to fear from Snapchat messages that disappear forever.

In James Corbett's six-minute Murder On Snapchat, the app that deletes your messages seconds after they're sent is used to commit the perfect crime. It's creepy and dark, and feels like it could totally happen.

E-Books Could Be The Future Of Social Media

E-Books Could Be The Future Of Social Media | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Michael Grothaus:  "In the future, e-books will act just like social networks. We’ll use them on our phones, share and comment right inside e-reader apps, and publishers will use our data to help them make better marketing decisions. If you think digital reading is exploding now, just wait."

Dorothea Martin's curator insight, September 3, 2013 3:10 AM

Readmill, the social reading experience and book marketing on a whole new level:

“We thought that there was a huge potential in taking what Goodreads had done on social on the web for books, but doing that for a mobile integrated reading experience,” says Berggren. “So instead of having to read your book and then think, ‘Okay, now I have to go to Goodreads, find it there, add it to my profile, and write my review,’ we just wanted to let you share and review from inside of the book.”

“Authors and publishers get access to a dashboard where they can see the engagement matrix of a specific book and see how many people that start reading the book actually finish it, how long it takes, if they recommended it to friends, and how much they shared throughout that experience,” explains Berggren.

According to Berggren, modern publishers miss a lot of marketing opportunities for their authors because they don’t know where or when to target their marketing efforts. "

I have too many opinions on this subject but I don't wish ti bore anyone. Nor do I wish to detract from the article. It is a New York Times opinion piece and you may have to register to read the entire article but I think you will find it worthwhile.

If you have children just starting on-line (for me grandchildren) there is usefull advice about dealing with cyber bullying.

But the piece is primarily targetted at an adult audience. Discussion on-line is a usefull way to expand your horizons but it comes with dangers that you don't experience in face to face exchanges.

I sm pretty thick skinned an sufficiently arrogant that I mostly ignore negative comments. But this piece offered some advice that will cause me to mend my ways a bit.

The Truth About Kids And Social Media

Amy Jo Martin:  "According to a recent study, 78% of parents helped create their children’s Facebook pages, and 7.5 million users are under the age of 13. The way your kids use social today will shape their future. It's time for everyone to get educated on how--and how not--to live online."

I want to use quotes from this article for the parent component of our digital summer program.

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's curator insight, May 28, 2013 9:57 AM

Boy are these kids going to be mad at their parents by the time they're 20-somethings...  "Why didn't you protect us?"  they will ask.  "Because we didn't know better," their parents will say.

Putting a kid on the internet without knowing anything about how cookies and cache and logins and TOSs work is like handing them a handgun or putting them behind the wheel of a running car and then leaving.
