How To Prepare For A Career In Internet Marketing: A Guide For Students

How To Prepare For A Career In Internet Marketing: A Guide For Students | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
In the last few weeks, a few students have tweeted me asking what they can do to prepare for a career in Internet marketing. While I was happy to reply with a few tips, it’s a topic that is better addressed in a blog post rather than 140 characters.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Nice tips in this article for Marketing Students.

Advice for all students is to fully take advantage of all of your resources...not just at your University.  You should be staying in touch, and keeping a database of your teachers -- even from High School.

When time is right, it is important to contact them to let them know your career goals.  Provide them with your targeted resume, and ask them to assist by forwarding your resume to companies and individuals who may be aware of a job opening, etc.

Fully leverage all of your University's networking, asscoiations, clubs, and career centers to help market you.

What other resources do you have at your fingertips?  Family, neighbors, friends, past students, etc.

Hire My Friend! The Easy Logic (and Hidden Dangers) of Employee Referrals

Hire My Friend! The Easy Logic (and Hidden Dangers) of Employee Referrals | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
The downside of a very useful short-cut. (RT @GIJobsMagazine: #Military #Job Seekers.: More evidence that #networking works.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Okay, employee referrals are always welcome from valued/tenured staff, because they usually know the competencies and values of the company.  Typically employees will recommend someone they believe will also believe and live the values of the company.

Any interview process can take hundreds of hours, and some positions could be open for weeks and months.  Why wouldn't a hiring manager put the employee referral at the top of the list for interviews?

As long as employee referrals are only one source in your multi-fauceted source pool, and your recuitment strategies are legal -- I personally always welcomed employee referrals.

How to find out what the hiring manager is really looking for

Trish Sadar's insight:

I have been asked this question over and over again, so I thought I would share with you my humble opinion.

There are times when a position remains posted for weeks -- even months.  At times the cause of this, is that the hiring manager (decision maker) may have the picture of their ideal candidate, and every person interviewed lacks one or two of those traits.  The tough part is, that most of the time what is most important to the hiring manager may not be listed on the job posting.

So, the question is how do you find out what the hiring manager is looking for?  All you have to do is ask!

I suggest at the right time of the interview to ask the interviewer a question similar to this...Could you describe for me the ideal candidate for this position and what traits and skills are most important?

When you find out what the hiring manager is seeking, it could be confidentiality or strong project skills....then you could make certain that during the interview you touch upon those key skills and competencies.

Four Tips on Negotiating Your Salary for a New Job

Four Tips on Negotiating Your Salary for a New Job | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
You've aced your big interview, impressed your would-be boss and now your potential employer wants to talk compensation.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Excellent article!

Always do your homework, and prior to the interview do you best to identify the salary range of the position.

If you do state the salary you are seeking, the salary could be under the salary range or could take you out of the running, because you are asking a few thousand dollars more.

My philosophy:  Don't be the first to talk salary.  Interviewing is like dating.  During the beginning of the process your job is to be invited back for more interviews.  If you are asked how much salary your require early in the interview process, you can always use generic phrases such as "I have done my research, and I am confident that (company name) pays competitively for this position.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asked a young Engineer fresh out of MIT, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"

The Engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."

The interviewer enquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years say, a red Corvette?"

The Engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?"

And the interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."

Great article!  I always suggest to everyone that the phone interview preparation needs to be approached with differently than the face-to-face.

You need to do all of the same preparation as you would for the in person one; however, now you need to make sure that you turn off the call waiting, use a land based phone, practice answering questions by recording yourself to see how your responses sound.

In person - the majority of communication is your body language.  Over the telephone the majority is your tone of voice, words, word emphasis, etc.  So practice!!
