Andrew Gerkens's insight:

So many important take aways in terms of workplace learning, the role of line leaders and implications for L&D. Learning is often perceived as separate to work and L&D often reinforces this through their behaviour, their command and control approach and the language we use. Rather than learning, we should instead talk about working - how we can help workers get better at what they do, how workers can support each other to solve problems and how they can share good practice at the speed of business.

Developing Talent: What You’re Probably Missing

Developing Talent: What You’re Probably Missing | Adaptive Leadership and Cultures | Scoop.it

What kind of thinkers do you need in your business? What types of leadership will get you desired results? To answer these questions, you’ve got to be thinking about a…

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

Horizontal Leadership Development - Knowledge, Skills, Information versus Vertical Development - complex and sophisticated ways of thinking. It’s called vertical development because it is based on levels, or stages, of thinking. It involves gaining new perspectives and leadership mindsets needed to make the business strategy work.

Includes links to two white papers by Nick Petrie, who has also written extensively about leadership in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world.

The End of Leadership

The End of Leadership - On Leadership - Medium
Many of today’s leaders aren’t. So what are they?
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

A thought provoking article about the state of public leadership. It makes the point that most public leaders are “demagogues” rather than leaders:

“a person, especially an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.”

Americas-Workforce-Report-2015.pdf

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

An interesting reference exploring the relative importance (or lack thereof) of leadership development in American organisations. They raise an interesting point about the idea of 'sustainment'. Unfortunately, the survey audience appear to focus on 'learning' rather than the sustainment of performance and of talent/capability.

Decoding leadership: What really matters

Decoding leadership: What really matters | Adaptive Leadership and Cultures | Scoop.it
New research suggests that the secret to developing effective leaders is to encourage four types of behavior. A McKinsey Quarterly article.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

Most people would think this list makes pretty good sense and most leaders (already) know these are the things they should do. The gap is not in the 'knowing', it is in the 'doing'. How do we move leadership from common sense to common practice?

Annual Surveys vs. Pulsing Surveys. Here’s the Difference

Annual Surveys vs. Pulsing Surveys. Here’s the Difference | Adaptive Leadership and Cultures | Scoop.it
Have you been wondering about the difference between an annual survey and a pulsing survey? We've listed out the pros and cons of them here.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

In a previous role, I took much pride in the HR team's roll out of the two yearly employee engagement survey. It felt important and valuable and we were busy - very busy....but there is a difference between being busy and being successful.

With hindsight, I can see that it was expensive and resource intensive, it was seen as an administrative process managed by HR and ultimately, I recognise that it had little impact on behaviour/culture change and performance.

Behaviour and culture change need to be embedded within the workflow of every worker. I'm excited at the potential 'pulsing' has to make engagement (happiness) everyone's business.

Global Human Capital Trends

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

The Deloitte 2015 Global Human Capital Trends report makes the case for a new HR playbook — one that taps HR to be more agile, forward thinking, and bolder in its solutions. The report involved surveys and interviews with more than 3,300 business and HR leaders from 106 countries. Among the findings:

  • The gap is widening between what business leaders want and what HR is delivering.
  • Engagement and culture skyrocketed to the no. 1 issue around the world, with 87 percent of companies rating it important or very important vs. 79 percent last year.
  • Half the respondents rated their leadership shortfalls as "very important," while only 31 percent believe their leadership pipeline is “ready.”
  • Learning and development issues exploded, rising from the no. 8 to the no. 3 most important talent challenge in this year’s study, yet despite this demand, capabilities in learning dropped significantly.

Millennial Survey 2015 | Deloitte | Social impact, Innovation | Adaptive Leadership and Cultures | Scoop.it
Deloitte's Millennial Survey revealed that our world's future leaders are increasingly viewing business through the lens of social impact.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

Findings from Deloitte's fourth annual Millennial Survey show that business, particularly in developed markets, will need to make significant changes to attract and retain the future workforce.

Deloitte surveyed 7,800 of tomorrow's leaders, from 29 countries, on effective leadership and how business operates and impacts society.

A key finding - Skills gained through Higher Education (Formal) represent around 1/3 of those needed to be effective in their role, organisation and career. Reinforcement of the importance of 70:20:10 and workplace learning approaches to building and sustaining capability (effectiveness) and supporting mastery.
